BALANCE

Type: Cardio / Aerobic / Stress Relief / Flexibility

Location: Downstairs Studio

Class Level: Beginner to Advanced

Balance classes are something a little different here at New Age Fitness. Along with improving overall fitness levels, the class focuses more on mind cantering and proper breathing techniques.

Classes last 55 minutes per session and begin with a tai chi and Pilates warm up segment of flowing moves. Next up we include a series of yoga movements to get things going followed by stretching and balance moves.

Once part one is complete the class moves on to the secondary segment which includes slow twists and bends to fully engage your core muscles.

Lastly the class finishes off with meditation and observation of the effects of the class on your body and mind.

The aim is to improve your cardiovascular fitness, reduce your stress levels and improve your body’s flexibility. It’s the perfect class for those living a stressful life and needs to unwind while also improving their fitness.

BODY COMBAT

Type: Cardio / Aerobic /  Full Body Toning

Location: Downstairs Studio

BODYCOMBAT is a fun, empowering cardio workout where you will undergo a cracking workout, whilst relieving stress and raising your heart rate. This energetic class, available throughout our Fitness & Wellbeing estate, is strongly influenced by martial arts such as Karate, Boxing, Taekwondo, Tai Chi and Muay Thai.

The classes are supported by powerful music and energetic instructors. You will punch, kick and kata your way through calories to a leaner, healthier, fitter body. As with all LES MILLS programs, a new BODYCOMBAT class is produced every three months with new music and choreography to keep things fresh and exciting for all.

Each session lasts 55 minutes. In a typical class, you will start with warm up, followed by combat and power workouts (guards, jab, cross, hook, upper cut, front kick, roundhouse kick and side kick) and end with cool down. The classes can be explosive, so remember to pace yourself.

Don’t worry you do not need to have prior martial arts experience to take part in a BODYCOMBAT session. This class is suitable for all those with a moderate fitness level and the movements are quite simple so you don’t need to be greatly coordinated. Male or female, old or young – come and give BODYCOMBAT a go.

BODY PUMP

If you’ve ever been to a gym before there’s a good chance you will have heard of Body Pump. From New Zealand based fitness masters Les Mills, it’s a class that has been around for over a quarter of a century and that staying power is testament to it working for so many people of all ages, sizes and weights across the world.

Being a weight based workout and employing the use of a lightweight barbell you will instantly notice the difference in this class compared to a cardio only workout. Not only will you tone your body but your strength will improve dramatically too.

Initially conceived as a class that both men and woman would feel equally at home attending, Body Pump has grown into the power house it is today because it works. At between 45 minutes to one hour long, you really get a massive boost to your fitness levels after every class and the results speak for themselves. Each class features 8 separate muscle group specific tracks and incorporate squats, presses, deadlifts and more all with low weights and high repetitions.

CIRCUITS

It’s the perfect blend of both aerobic and resistance training where all manner of work out routines, moves and lifts are mixed up and placed together in a fast paced routine that really packs a punch.

Circuit training is a form of body conditioning and resistance workouts using high-intensity aerobics catering to both strength building and muscular endurance. Included in our circuits classes are a mix of the following:

FATBURN EXTREME

Type: Cardio / Aerobic

FatBurn Extreme (FBX) is a Scottish developed fitness workout that uses the after burn effect to shed calories for hours after you finish working out.

The brain child of local fitness guru Dianne Teo, it is a class that is spreading like wildfire not only here in the UK but across the world with new instructors and classes appearing across Japan, Australia and Thailand. And if a fitness programme from Scotland is being picked up in Asia where the martial arts were conceived you know it’s got to be good!

With over 40 years in the health and fitness industry, Dianne’s workout programme caters to everyone looking to tone up, shift excess body fat and improve their cardiovascular abilities. It’s a high intensity class that moves at a fast pace but never too fast for participants as everyone works to their own maximum, not the maximum dictated by the instructor. If you reach your peak and need a time out you take one, the key is to always be aiming for your max so your body is burning fat at its max too.

LES MILLS GRIT

It’s the latest sensation from arguably the biggest name in fitness anywhere on the planet! Les Mills GRIT is a high impact, cardio based workout that uses your own bodyweight along with HIIT (high intensity interval training) to blast fat, burn calories and keep burning them for hours after you finish the class all the while improving your fitness levels and athletic abilities.

If you’ve got 30 minutes to spare then GRIT is the ideal fitness class for you. Here at New Age Fitness we provide this top class experience to you at no additional cost (saving you £6 per class compared to other gyms in the local area) and we run it across multiple days of the week so you can pick and choose when to attend or if you like, come along as many times as you’d like!

HIIT has really taken over in the last few years and Les Mills have produced a scientific based workout programme that delivers results no matter your age, weight or size. Using short bursts of intense activity followed by periods of recovery it emulates the human bodys primal programming and gives far more benefit that constant low volume cardio workouts. At its core, GRIT is all about burning calories but while doing so you’ll find a massive improvement in your cardiovascular fitness, an increase in your speed and agility, getting all this benefit from only a half hour of exercise.

LEGS, BUMS & TUMS

Legs, bums & tums is a class that has turned out to be a firm fave with our female members, and for good reason! Our LBT class is a fun filled way to help tone those wobbly bits, get a firmer bum, tum and leaner legs too.

It’s a full body aerobic workout that aims to tone up thighs, bum and stomach, great for those who want to lose weight or even for those who simply want to improve their fitness levels. We start with a gentle warm up to get you moving. This may involve jogging on the spot, doing some arm swings and shoulder rolls or just some general stretches to loosen those limbs before the real work starts.

Queenax Functional Rig Training

METAFIT

30 minutes – that’s all you need to get your fitness fix when you attend a Metafit class!

It’s the original 30 minute, non choreographed, bodyweight only HIIT workout created by a former Royal Marine Commando, it combines the latest training techniques with traditional bodyweight exercises to set your metabolism on fire.

One thing people love about Metafit is that it produces incredible results in a short space of time. Instead of spending hours pumping weights or pounding away at a treadmill, Metafit is limited to half-hour high-intensity workout sessions. Essentially, it is an evolution of interval training, where you improve your endurance and strength by pushing your metabolism to the limit in small bursts. Many people prefer this approach to spending hours grinding away at the gym.

Don’t be put off by the fact that Metafit was developed by a Marine Commando! The great thing about Metafit is that the exercises involved can all be adapted to your ability and current level of fitness. Anyone can attend the class and come away feeling stronger, fitter and more confident.

SPIN

Type: Cardio / Aerobic

Location: Upstairs Studio

Spin classes are by far one of the most popular here at New Age Fitness. If you don’t know, spin is the term for indoor cycling and is a group class hosted up stairs in our spin studio by one of our fully trained and qualified spin instructors. Our spin cycles are fully adjustable no matter your size or shape and also have a drinks holder for your all important water bottle.

Spin is a cardio (aerobic) workout set to music and lasts between 30 to 60 minutes depending on which class is being taken. We also run beginners spin classes for member who have never been before and want to ease in gently before joining an intermediate class.

With some classes you need to have balance and rhythm but with spin you don’t need anything other than the spin bike we provide. You go at your own pace and are in full control of how much resistance you work with or how fast or slow you want to pedal. It’s also very low impact so if you have any issues with your joints, ligaments or legs then spin is ideally suited to you.

Throughout the class the workout is varied so you won’t be bored. At times you will be standing, sitting and sprinting all the time being lead by the class instructor who guides you and the rest of the class.

Spinning is non-competitive. Especially if you’re a beginner, remember that it will take a few weeks to build up your fitness level to be able to work hard for the whole class. It’s important not to jump in at the deep end so work at a lower intensity to begin with.

You can also expect to feel fatigue throughout your leg muscles when you’re newer to spin, even if you’re used to working out in general. But no matter what, don’t stop pedalling. At the very least, keep your legs moving slowly. So if you get tired, simply reduce your resistance and slow down to catch your breath.

You will also feel a little saddle soreness from the seat, and that’s very normal. After coming to class a couple of times that soreness will go away.

What to wear: Workout clothes (but no long/baggy trousers/shorts, because those can get caught in the pedals/wheels) and flat-soled workout shoes are a must. If you have them, padded cycling shorts will increase your comfort. But cycling shorts and shoes are not necessary, especially for beginners.

What to bring: At least one water bottle and a towel.

THAI BOXING

Type: Cardio / Aerobic

At New Age Fitness we like to offer more than just the normal rota of fitness classes and our Thai Boxing classes are just one example of this.

Our resident Thai Boxing instructor Denise Cork has trained for over 10 years and has visited Thailand to further develop her skills, bringing that knowledge back to Scotland where has is involved in competitive fighting competitions.

Thai boxing is a combat sport (martial art) that has been developed in Thailand. It is known also as “the art of eight limbs”, because both hands, elbows, knees, and legs can be used. The training involved is known for being strong and firm. It aims to harden the eight members of the body and almost every act of moving in Thai boxing use the whole body, while turning the hip to every kick and every blow with the fist.

Give our Thai boxing class a go to increase your lean muscle mass and muscular endurance while improving your stamina, speed and body co-ordination.

YOGA

It wasn’t so long ago that yoga was considered something more of a pass time than a serious fitness tool – but how times have changed! Sports legends like Andy Murray and Ryan Giggs have spoken out recently as advocates of yoga and more and more people are catching the bug and getting involved!

You don’t have to be involved in sports to see the pluses either as everyone, of all shapes and sizes can and will find benefit by coming to a class – they key is to make the decision to attend not just one yoga class, but at least 4 to begin to see the changes in body and mind.

What you’ll discover is that there are improvements in your flexibility, you’ll get stronger muscles, begin to look better and issues such as back pain and arthritis will be helped too. Your balance will improve along with circulation, breathing and posture too.

After a few classes you’ll learn to settle your mind and body leading to better sleep, less stress in your daily life and a sharpened awareness.
